We can now treat Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in our new clinic in Sevenoaks.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent form of skin cancer. Although it seldom spreads to other areas of the body, it can lead to considerable tissue damage and disfigurement if not treated. Surgical removal remains the most common and effective method for managing BCC.
Basal Cell Carcinoma treatment (BCC)
The procedure entails removing the cancerous lesion along with a margin of healthy surrounding tissue to ensure complete elimination of cancer cells. Depending on the tumour’s size and location, the surgeon may administer either local or general anaesthesia.
After the cancerous growth is removed, the wound is either closed with stitches or left to heal naturally, depending on the size and location of the excision. In most cases, this procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
Although surgical excision is highly effective, it may result in scarring. The extent and visibility of the scar depend on the area and size of the tissue removed. In some instances, reconstructive surgery—such as a skin graft or local skin flap—may be needed to repair tissue damage or improve cosmetic outcomes.
Early detection and treatment of BCC are crucial in preventing significant tissue damage and disfigurement. Regular skin checks by a specialist like Mr Kumar, along with the consistent use of sunscreen and protective clothing, can significantly reduce the risk of developing BCC.
Mohs
Mr Kumar collaborates closely with Mohs surgeons, where a dermatologist performs the Mohs procedure, followed by same-day plastic surgery reconstruction by Mr Kumar.
What is Mohs surgery?
Mohs surgery is a specialised technique primarily used to treat skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The procedure involves carefully removing thin layers of cancerous skin, each of which is examined under a microscope for the presence of cancer cells. If cancer is still detected, another layer is removed from the same area, and the process is repeated until all cancerous tissue is eliminated. This precise approach ensures complete cancer removal while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible, reducing scarring and making it particularly effective for delicate areas like the face.
