Mole removal is a routine procedure performed to eliminate moles that appear atypical or may be potentially cancerous. Moles that change in size, shape, or color, or have irregular borders, can be signs of melanoma or other types of skin cancer and should be removed for further evaluation.
Mole Removal
Although mole excision is a straightforward procedure, it’s essential to have the mole assessed before proceeding with removal. If the mole is benign or located in a highly visible area, such as the face, alternative treatment options may be more suitable.
Complete Excision
Mole excision typically begins with numbing the area around the mole using a local anaesthetic. A small incision is then made to remove the entire mole, along with a thin margin of surrounding tissue. The wound is closed with sutures, and a minor scar may remain afterward.
Shave Excision
If the mole is benign (non-cancerous), surgical shaving is a safe and often preferred option. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and the mole is carefully shaved off using a scalpel or specialised tool. A dressing is then applied to protect the site. Healing typically involves the formation of a scab, which should be regularly moisturised. In most cases, this results in a subtle or barely visible scar.
After mole excision, it’s important to keep the wound clean and dry, and to avoid strenuous activities or direct sun exposure until it has fully healed. Stitches are usually removed within one to two weeks, and the resulting scar will generally fade gradually over time.
