We can now treat squamous cell carcinomas at our new clinic in Sevenoaks.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a form of skin cancer that originates from the squamous cells in the skin. It is the second most common type of skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma and can be more aggressive and potentially serious if not treated.

Squamous cell carcinoma treatment (cSCC)

Surgical removal is a common and effective treatment for cSCC, providing the best chance for a cure while reducing the risk of the cancer spreading to other areas of the body.

The surgical removal of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) involves excising the cancerous lesion along with a margin of healthy skin. The size of this margin depends on factors such as the lesion’s thickness and location, as well as the patient’s age and overall health. In some cases, if the cancer has spread, removal of nearby lymph nodes may also be necessary.

When the cSCC is located in an area with enough loose skin, the wound can usually be closed directly. However, if there isn’t sufficient skin, reconstruction may be required using a skin graft from another part of the body or a local skin flap taken from the tissue adjacent to the surgical site. After the procedure, patients might experience some discomfort and scarring, which can be managed with pain relief and proper wound care. The wound is typically covered with a bandage and may need to be kept dry and elevated for a period of time.

Early detection and treatment of cSCC are crucial for achieving the best outcomes. Individuals with a history of sun exposure, weakened immune systems, or a personal or family history of skin cancer should monitor their skin closely and seek medical advice promptly if they notice any unusual growths or changes.

In summary, surgical removal is a highly effective treatment for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, offering a strong chance of cure and reducing the risk of cancer spread. Working closely with a healthcare provider will help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual case.
