Carleen is an experienced integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, who specialises in working with children, young people and their families. With over 20 years of experience in various settings, such as educational and criminal settings, Carleen brings a wealth of clinical experience and expertise to her role.

Carleen Kirk

She undertook her foundation training in Counselling and Psychotherapy at CCPE in 2003 and went on to support children with additional educational needs, whilst undertaking further training at the Tavistock NHS trust in 2007. After having taken a break to raise her own children she returned to the profession in 2015 and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children and young people in schools in 2018.

As an integrative therapist she draws from different modalities, including psychodynamics, person-centred, creative and systemic approaches, and she is guided what is most suitable for the individual child or young person. She is sensitive and considerate of intergenerational family context as well as school and societal influences.

She offers a non-judgmental, child-centred and compassionate approach that supports children, young people and families with their challenges. She works together with the child or young person with a view to encourage them to find their own internal and external resources that can support their ongoing development and wellbeing. Whilst holding onto principles of confidentiality, Carleen is a firm believer in thinking together with the systems around the child, so to best provide ongoing support for children and young people as they grow and develop.

In addition to her clinical work, she is the Programme Lead on a Post Graduate Diploma Training underwritten by the University of East London. She leads a team and training programme, writes and delivers lectures and facilitates learning forums to support child and adolescent clinicians in training.

Carleen is passionate about early intervention and has most recently been involved in a pilot research project led by UCL to improve wellbeing in schools, which is due to be rolled out nationally.

Whatever the difficulties facing children and young people, she aims to offer support by offering a space where these difficulties can be thought about and understood, so that children, young people and their families can thrive, with the capacity to manage the inevitable ups and downs of life.
