Advanced Dry Eye Treatment: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
As part of our commitment to offering the most advanced care, we now provide Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy using the Lumenis OptiLight system—a clinically proven treatment designed to address the underlying causes of dry eye disease.
Many patients suffer from Evaporative Dry Eye, most commonly linked to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). In this condition, the oil-producing glands within the eyelids become blocked or inflamed, leading to tear film instability and increased evaporation. While drops may provide short-term relief, they often do not treat the root cause.
IPL therapy represents a significant step forward by targeting these underlying mechanisms directly—supporting restoration of normal gland function and improving long-term ocular surface health.
How IPL Works
IPL delivers controlled pulses of light to the skin around the eyes, where it acts through several complementary mechanisms to improve dry eye:
- Reduces inflammation It helps close abnormal blood vessels along the eyelid margins, preventing the release of inflammatory mediators that contribute to chronic irritation.
- Restores Meibomian gland function Gentle thermal energy softens and liquefies thickened oils within the glands, improving flow and stabilising the tear film.
- Improves eyelid hygiene It reduces bacterial load and organisms such as Demodex, which can worsen inflammation and disrupt tear stability.
- Breaks the cycle of dry eye disease By addressing inflammation, gland dysfunction, and tear instability together, IPL helps interrupt the chronic cycle of ocular surface disease and supports longer-term improvement
What to Expect from Treatment
IPL is delivered as part of a structured, personalised care plan:
- A typical course includes 4 sessions, spaced 2–4 weeks apart
- Each treatment takes approximately 10–15 minutes
- The procedure is non-invasive and comfortable
- There is no downtime, allowing immediate return to normal activities
Patients often notice gradual improvement throughout the treatment course, including reduced irritation, improved comfort, and more stable vision.
