Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
(AMD) is the biggest cause of vision loss in the UK, usually affecting people over the age of 50. The macula is the central region of the retina, which lines the back of the eye – like the film of a traditional camera. The macula enables detailed vision, for activities such as reading and seeing faces. There are two forms of AMD – dry and wet, which can both lead to loss of central vision.
Wet AMD
The less common but faster progressing and more severe type of AMD. Abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina, which can leak fluid or blood, causing severe vision loss.
Dry AMD
This is the most common type and progresses slower. ‘Wear and tear’ changes lead to deposits forming under the retina and patches of thinning in the macula. Over time, these areas expand, potentially resulting in significant loss of central vision.
Treatments for AMD
These have advanced significantly in recent years, especially for wet AMD. There are a range of anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections now available to reduce blood vessel growth and slow disease progression, with varying mechanisms and durability. There is no proven cure for dry AMD. There is currently much ongoing research into novel treatments to slow the progression of dry AMD, such as light therapy, injections targeting the immune system and the potential to replace damaged retinal cells.
